These days, you need not spend a fortune on equipment or pay for expensive recording studio time to produce a professional-sounding product.

There are many free software packages you can download for recording and editing sound files. Two of the most popular are Audacity and WavePad; both are easy for beginners to learn and are compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems. Advanced users may want to consider paying for sophisticated software such as MixPad, ProTools or Digital Performer.
